Merry Christmas. Or happy Hanukah. Or happy yule, or sanghamitta, or brumalia, or kwanzaa, or any of the other winter solstice holidays.
2,000 years ago December 25th was the shortest day of the year. So, whichever holiday you celebrate in the middle or end of December what you’re celebrating is the return of light to the world. And whether you’re christian or muslim or jewish or buddhist or pagan or atheist or shinto or taoist or zoroastrian or animist you probably believe, based on an abundance of horrifying evidence, that the world is awash in darkness. Literal darkness, yes, as we just had the shortest day of the year in the northern hemisphere. But figurative(and all too real) darkness, as well; tribalism, violence, racism, brutality, ignorance, hatred, misogyny, bigotry, selfishness. So, happy end of December, and may we all work as hard as possible to destroy and reject the forces of darkness.
