On Thursday, December 13, 2018, animal care staff made the difficult decision to euthanize Quincy, a male koala who was under veterinary care for diabetes. Quincy had been battling type 1 diabetes since February 2018, and was transferred from the Los Angeles Zoo to the San Diego Zoo in May 2018 to assist with his medical care.

A few weeks ago, Quincy developed pneumonia. Despite comprehensive medical treatment, his health continued to decline. Due to the severity of his disease, staff members made the difficult decision to euthanize him.

Quincy was well known to the public for being one of only a few koalas that have been diagnosed with and treated for diabetes. Earlier this year, Quincy was fitted with a continuous glucose monitor in an effort to improve his opportunity to thrive. His story touched countless people around the globe who are living with diabetes.

Quincy will be missed by staff, volunteers and Zoo guests. Please take a moment to share your condolences with those people who worked closely with Quincy, and who are especially feeling his loss. ?❤️ #RIPQuincy #sandiegozoo
