-night b4 was my last #LeeAndrewsAndTheHearts show. I kept #Organix a secret (miracle!) but it was time to tell my dad the truth: “Riq & I have a group, we got a deal, I’m not going to college”. my dad didn’t know about @TheRoots til our 2nd album— he knew I was up to somethin (I had like 5 music projects on the back burner—-i stayed in bands just to have source material to sample for the Roots. Besides: I wasn’t the cute 12 yr old drummin for dad anymore & there was pressure to live up to my schoolmates (@chrmcbride, @joey_defrancesco, @boyziimen & @amellarrieux were making strides) he just saw ZERO future in “rap” (he gave feedback the next day...said I need a real job) so i had to grow up.
- I also knew my parent’s marriage was on its last breath this week so the anxiety of once being the only kid w harmonious household to well?..”this” was hard to deal w even though I was 22 at the time.
-we had gotten our 1st advance a week ago, I mean we thought busking for $200 was big time, but man you couldn’t tell me NOTHING sleeping w like $8500 in 20s in my pillow IN MY BUNK BED. I was the MAN! I copped EVERY @プーマ & did my first (of a future gazillion) binge shopping missions at #TowerRecords (bill was $2k) I discovered #OnceUponADaydream by #ThePolice & had that song on loop 2 days straight. Synth line had me in a TRANCE.
-purchased this #NeilPert sized drum kit much to the chagrin of my manager—he literally said “they shoulda never gave yall money” he was right..we was rich for like 3 weeks. We squandered it on everything.
-my last day of interning #RuffhouseRecords (also @santigold‘s first day) came w a favor for publicist Davida Garr telling me they just signed a new band kinda like us & can we give em 20 mins to make their Philly debut. My mom was a massive fan of the soap #AsTheWorldTurns & I really liked that girl (“WOW can she sing? & rap? She any good?”) -met Preemo & Jeru for the first time (Saw P’s world famous van—loudest speakers EVER. Many a hip hop classic will be tested here)
Such a strange 25 year journey.
