Photo by @Cristina Mittermeier // A small fish swims circles around elkhorn coral as bouncing sun rays illuminate this dreamy scene. Elkhorn coral are endangered, and their disappearance has been detrimental to Caribbean ecosystems as they are a keystone species and are important reef-building engineers. But amazingly, here, in the Gardens of the Queen, they are flourishing. This marine reserve has been protected since 1996, and houses one of the last healthy and thriving reef ecosystems in the Caribbean. Thankfully, places like this exist to showcase the benefits of marine protection in the most beautiful ways, and hopefully inspire future protection for vulnerable marine areas that need it most. #FollowMe at @Cristina Mittermeier and explore my feed for more underwater photography. #ocean #marineprotection #coral #Cuba
