Morning! Happy Sunday! Every Sunday my social channels are donated to a different student involved in our #PutAPriceOnIt campaign with the @yearsofliving team to talk about carbon pricing. If you aren’t already involved, now is a good time to jump in and read! Today's post comes from Jade Aguilera, a student at Emerson College in Boston, MA. “I still remember the day my AP Environmental Science class made an undeniable mark on my worldview. Each student was to present on a human-caused environmental disaster; mine was the Union Carbide Cyanide Gas disaster in Bhopal, India, which as of 2010 was the world's worst industrial disaster. The death toll was at least 3,787 at first and over 16,000 deaths following. Management at a pesticide plant overlooked a deadly leak of cyanide gas into the densely populated surroundings. I can never unsee one photo a poisoned child left dead in the dirt. We humans have inflicted numerous wounds on ourselves and our environment--Chernobyl, the Exxon-Valdez Spill, Love Canal, and worst of all climate change. We do this when we are careless. I did not want to fall into this carelessness. These problems can seem over overwhelming through one pair of eyes. But the #PutAPriceOnIt campaign helped me narrow my efforts on a specific goal and come together with others to advocate for Carbon Pricing. This policy is one big way we can lessen the blow of climate change, hold those that have power accountable for their carbon footprint, and help them see the world, not just profit. This work reminds me that we are never alone.”
