Repost from @cedar.coast field station research coordinator, @mackbartlett : “Today it was announced that over the next 5 years salmon farms are being phased out of the Broughton Archipelago, with the opportunity for some farms to remain if they reach agreements with the nations in which they reside. The Broughton archipelago is near and dear to our team. I spent multiple years monitoring wild juvenile salmon near these farms that are soon to be removed. This year salmon farms within Clayoquot Sound had the largest sea lice outbreaks in BC and the worst outbreak ever for a number of the farms here. We started a preliminary wild juvenile salmon monitoring program to try and gauge the impact of this outbreak on the wild salmon here. Many salmon populations in Clayoquot Sound are in bad shape and we need to reduce the stresses we are applying to them. Next year we will be expanding our program.
