I’m headed home from a trip to #india, where I gained a better understanding of why our #oceans are being polluted with #plastic. There is a local garbage issue here, but the root of the problem is largely western developed nations shipping their garbage overseas and overwhelming local waste facilities like this one. When the monsoons arrive much of this garbage is washed into the sea. We need to start reducing our plastic consumption, reusing what we already have, and recycling our waste instead of shipping it overseas for developing nations to deal with, or NOT. This is ultimately a global issue; when garbage flows into the sea in Asia, or elsewhere, it ends up in our ocean, on our beaches, and in our food. Let’s #turnthetide on plastic pollution. I’m excited to bring this newfound perspective back to the @cedar.coast field station and our #microplastic monitoring program. I’m also excited to work with the many other great organizations tackling this issue, including @clayoquotcleanup @surfrider_pacificrim @uclueletaquarium and @northsails_collection
