Ok, so I must admit, both of us were quite conflicted today. We were desperate to meet elephants, but riddled with concerns about their treatment, and the larger question of whether wild animals should be domesticated at all, even if for their own safety. We arrived this morning, unsure of what we were going to find, armed with questions. I was worried my heart might get broken if I saw animals with broken spirits. Thankfully, what we found was a group of happy, playful elephants, several with adorable babies that were as relaxed and mischievous as our puppy (but with teeth that could nip off a tip of a finger if you’re not careful). These majestic creatures are so wise and graceful (well, the adults are, the babies are clumsy + hilarious), and these in particular were calm and so happy. The women we met who were running the organization clearly love the animals. They are cared for and loved, go on long walks and to the river twice a day, and live out their days there (some have lived to 90 years old) being fed and looked after... and meeting them had an impact on me that was so profound, I can’t really describe it. I guess it’s one of those things where you can intellectually love wildlife, but there’s something about being in close contact with a wild animal that somehow connects you with all the other wild creatures on this planet in a way that is far beyond your rational mind. I wish that we lived in a world which didn’t encroach upon animals, where they could be completely safe in the wild and on many levels, I believe animals should be left alone. But we live in a world where there are less than 5,000 elephants left in Thailand (there were an estimated 100,000 in the early 1900s) and out of those, only about 1,000 are in the wild. So even though it’s controversial, i am grateful to the people that are looking after these creatures the best they can, and grateful to the elephants themselves for gracing us with their still, gentle, joyful spirits. Especially Jumpee, look at that faaaace ❤️❤️❤️❤️?
