GM's announcement that it will stop producing the Chevrolet Cruze and possibly shutter its plant in Lordstown, Ohio, was still sinking in to workers Tuesday.⠀

Roughly 1,600 employees stand to lose their jobs if the assembly plant, which has been a fixture in the region for 52 years, shuts down for good.⠀

"I was blindsided," said Cheryl Jonesco, 40, who explained that she's now open to transfer to a plant in Tennessee or Texas, despite the fact that her fiancé works at another GM plant in Parma, Ohio, while her daughter is close to finishing high school. "It's really hard on a family."⠀

Many workers at the plant and others at parts suppliers that depend on it to survive hope there is a chance GM will manufacture another vehicle there.⠀

The mayor of Lordstown, which has 3,200 residents, expects it to lose $1 million in annual tax revenue from the plant and its workers—nearly a quarter of the town's total budget.⠀
