Photo by @jimrichardsonng Loch Maree on a calm morning can be a stunning sight, a vision of tranquility and order. Secluded in Wester Ross on the northwest coast of Scotland, the Loch’s many islands have always attracted seekers like the 8th century saint Mark Ruba (for whom the Loch is named.) The loch’s remoteness made it attractive to that hermit then and to wildlife now. The islands are also havens for Caledonian pines, where they are protected in their youth from the deer that nibble the sprouts.
