“It was love at first puff.” For 2 years, Matt Murphy was vaping the nicotine equivalent of a pack of cigarettes a day. Matt, who is now 19, grew so attached to his Juul that he nicknamed the e-cigarette his “11th finger." He had developed a painful nicotine addiction that drained his savings, left him feeling winded when he played sports, put him at odds with friends and culminated in a shouting match with his parents. The confrontation was emotional, but ultimately helped motivate him to quit vaping. Experiences like Matt’s have placed #Juul at the epicenter of a national debate. On one side stand teenagers who have never smoked a cigarette but have swiftly become addicted to Juul’s intense nicotine hits. On the other are longtime adult smokers who celebrate the device as the aid that finally helped them quit smoking. Last week, the Food and Drug Administration tried to walk a careful line between the 2, announcing restrictions that only permit stores to sell most flavored e-cigarettes from closed-off areas that are inaccessible to customers under 18. @jbrightphoto took this photo of Matt.
