I start by putting a layer of conditioner over freshly rinsed and shampooed hair to avoid overprocessing and the toner picking up too dark! Then I put my lightest color over, usually a level 9 scalp to ends as my first layer. ∙
So to recap: layer 1 =conditioner, layer 2 =level 9 (or lightest) toner. Then I go in with a level 5 ish (my favorite formula is 6BV 5N @paulmitchellus The Demi) and I layer that directly over the level nine one the roots only. I’ll go in and comb the whole thing through to gain control over the hair and blend the root down into the mids. 99% of the time, I am separating the face from money piece and hitting that last with the third layer to maintain brightness. ∙
By overlaying the level 5ish over the 9, you get a toned perfect level 7-8 because the previous layers dilute it. Since level 7/8 are usually warm undertones this is the best way I’ve found to smudge down a root and maintain the desired tones! You can do this out at your station or in the sink! ✨
