Hiked about 2 hours to pay our respects to the woman who loved, researched, cared and protected the gorillas until her last breath. Dian Fossey, is buried beside the beloved gorillas who first accepted her and whom she studied so closely. I believe that it's through her work that the community has come to realize the importance of conservation, as a result poaching has since stopped and the government is now doing their own part researching and protecting the gorillas too, allowing her legacy to live on. Her team - The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International still studies 10 out of the 22 families they have in Rwanda. The results of their work? As of a few days ago Mountain Gorillas have gone from critically endangered to endangered - a level further away from extinction. I'm sure she is smiling up there in heaven ?
