So...I had a conversation with a good friend last night and I felt a connection that is rare for me. It made me think what causes us to feel these special bonds with other people. I first thought about what connection really means. The best description I could relate to is "the energy that exists between people when they feel seen, heard, and valued; when they can give and receive without judgment; and when they derive sustenance and strength from the relationship." Through my experiences, I've found that vulnerability is the key. It’s having the "courage to show up and be seen when we have no control over the outcome. The choice to be honest...the choice to let our true selves be seen. Vulnerability is not weakness; it’s our greatest measure of courage." I believe this courage to be vulnerable allows us to be more empathetic and to relate in a way that only comes from being open. However, vulnerability does not mean to overshare or to share indiscriminately with no consideration of others. It requires boundaries and trust. It's something that must be mutually earned.
This transparency is a scary thing to face. It may bring forth a lot of flaws and imperfections. But this is where your most authentic self, and greatest potential and connections will be found.
