Feldpost was the name given to the German military postal system used before, and during, World War I. Thomas Dworzak’s project of the same name has seen the Magnum photographer, over the last seven years, create an annotated image for each day of the conflict – over 1,500 of them in total. These ‘postcards’, with their extensive explanatory notes, represent a vision of the war which conveys its truly global nature: a complex picture of the conflict that delves into its far-reaching impact, myriad complexities, and present-day reverberations.

To mark the centenary of the Armistice, we are sharing a selection of work from the project today on Magnum. Link in bio.

PHOTO: Near the grave of Able Seaman Richard Morgan, Kilgwrrwg, Wales. Morgan died on Armistice Day while serving on the destroyer HMS Garland but he met his end in an accidental drowning. The last soldier to be killed in action on November 11, 1918 - when there were an estimated 11,000 casualties - is thought to be Sergeant Henry Gunther, a US serviceman of German descent. He was shot while trying to charge a German machine-gun post - the German troops tried to wave him away - at 10:59. Unaware of the Armistice, German forces in East Africa continued fighting for a further two days. Kilgwrrwg, Wales, UK. 2018/02
