#Repost @tayakyle with @get_repost ・・・ It’s already being thrown around that the gunman in Thousand Oaks, CA had PTSD. Please see link in bio for the full commentary - it’s important. This killer was a marine. He murdered 12 innocent people and appears to have taken his own life. I am about to be the voice of many veterans who have PTSD and are as frustrated as I am by this PTSD claim as a reason for murder. So buckle up and read on it you want to hear our take. PTSD DOES NOT MAKE A PERSON A MURDERER! We are seeing too many people use PTS or PTSD as an excuse for bad behavior. You know what spreading that narrative does?? It makes people who legitimately suffer feel less comfortable seeking out the help they need because now, society is turning the narrative into something none of us know to be true. Now if they tell someone they have PTSD they are concerned someone will think they are a murderer. Instead of being able to talk freely which is healthy, they are feeling the need to keep it to themselves so others don’t think they are dangerous. Isolation is the least helpful thing and that’s what we create for people who legitimately have PTSD when we spread this narrative that PTSD makes someone take lives. It is NOT TRUE. PTSD can and does affect areas of life and emotion, but it does NOT change character and does NOT turn people to evil actions. The man who killed my husband and his friend, Chad Littlefield, was on trial for murder where psychiatrists on both the prosecution and defense testified he did NOT have PTSD and did not even have trauma in his life and did not see combat in the military. Why did his family and the media claim it? I don’t know. My guess is it seems easier to digest that sort of evil action if we somehow think the murderer couldn’t help it. Let’s not forget the many, many people walking around with PTSD who are survivors of repeated sexual abuse, childhood abuse and trauma and domestic violence for years on end. It does not make someone a killer. Many of them have guns for self protection and a feeling of empowerment and safety after they are out of the abusive environment, and they are still not committing mass murders of innocent
