Pictures can speak a thousand words, tell stories, but can also lie. For example in this photo it looks as though Amy is angry. Her pupils are constricted and seemingly focused on me, her ears are back and her mouth is pulled tight, a sure sign that a lion means business and I look worried but unaware of the impending danger. The truth behind the picture is that Amy is coming out of a dark night pen to the bright outdoors and her eyes haven’t had time to adjust. Her ears are back because she’s moments away from affectionately head rubbing with me and there is actually zero aggression in her. I’m completely aware of her presence and totally relaxed but was engrossed in a talk I was giving to some visitors when this picture was snapped. So the next time you see a picture of an animal or person and jump to a definitive conclusion as to what is happening in the picture, think again. You may be way off the mark. I know I’ve been.
