Visitors to Kinhisayama Nukishu Temple in Asakawa Town who call up in advance often have the chance to see a real mummy - this is Yutei, a Buddhist priest who passed away upon reaching enlightenment while meditating in 1683. Before his final, deep meditation, he gathered together the people of the village and recited prayers to bring good health to the local people, who had suffered greatly in recent years. He’s one of just a handful of Japanese mummified priests who passed away while in a deep meditative state!
