Part of the reason I want to take more portraits of my parents is because I want to be with them more than I can be, and having photos is a way (if a poor one). A significant number of people that I care about have lost a parent, in one way or another. This pattern has changed my life. It’s hard to say how but to say that I love my parents so, so much. I enjoy every minute I can have, and am working on ways to have more. I dote on them like children. I celebrate some part of them with my wife or my sisters nearly every day. They are my most lasting sources of joy. It’s so hard to give it words, but my love for who my mom is (and who she is not), simply as a feeling, is a tribute to humanity itself, unwritten—undown. All this, all of it, even as they still elude, confuse, and sadden me with the ideological trappings of their generation as I am sure I do the same. It’s too much.
