My dad. Can’t figure him out. Last Sunday he won a lifetime achievement award for 45 years of service as a physician. The chief administrator of Via Christi Health System introduced him by saying, “some people build clinical and financial empires, there’s plenty of awards for that...this one is for those physicians who devote their life to working in the way of Christ.” Everyone who knows him already knows that. But it was a sweet thing to hear it said to a crowd of people. It is perhaps the only award he might want.
And like any Sunday when I was growing up, he carried his own flower arrangement, got his own car, picked up his family at the door. Then, when we got home...something new. He quietly started melting some butter and gathering stuff from the pantry. An hour later he came down stairs with the best molasses cookies any of us have ever had. We were astonished. This isn’t one of the things he does, not ever. “Have I never done that for you?”, he asked, with a smile. “Surely I have.” He hadn’t. Can’t figure him out.
