The second I met Chris Shultz he started talking trash about me being in a wheelchair. I was taken back but couldn’t help but laugh...like who is this guy!? He instantly made light of my disability because he was genuinely comfortable with me as a person (disabled or not) and naturally hilarious at the same time.

He knew what he was doing though, disarming the situation and breaking down those taboo walls disability puts up. Looking back...after learning about his cancer diagnosis and watching him battle daily, I get why being around me and other Paralympians was so natural for him. He was equally a part of the exclusive crew of people that have been to hell and back. He could relate, he did relate... and like most of us, chose to make make light of a shit situation and live life to the fullest.

Chris finished his battle with cancer today... and lord did he fight. I’m proud to have known him. To have sat next to him at dinners when his mouth sores from chemo made it nearly unbearable to sip even the blandest soup. To watch him in so much pain, show up and be present. That was beyond inspiring. .

The whole @toyotausa family is feeling the loss of a great man today. We are all better for having known him.
