“I was in Washington for Bill Clinton’s inauguration in 1993, when I met Aretha for the second time. (I had met her once before while working for The Detroit News.) She was an impressive African-American living legend. She was an artist, who came from the church, which helped her develop an amazing voice. Her voice was an artistic gift, as is my gift in visual image making. When someone commits to something, commits to the arts, you can see it, and it takes so much out of you.
