The Pechersk Lavra, a religious complex perched above the Dnipro River, is the crown jewel of the Orthodox Church in Ukraine, with a history stretching back nearly a thousand years. Tourists are welcome, but it is more than a museum, it’s a living place, with over a hundred monks in residence, a handful of active churches, and a theological academy. The Ukrainian Orthodox Church has been seeking independence from authorities in Moscow, mirroring the wider geopolitics, though many worshippers would prefer to keep politics separate from religion. Control of the Pechersk Lavra, should the church split (as seems likely), is sure to be contentious.
