Today we introduce Katia Repina @katia_repina & Carla Moral @mira86 who are two of the artists on display selected by an internationally acclaimed jury ✨Here a sneak peek at their work - ‘Alex, NYC, USA’ from the series ‘My Own Wings’ ? ‘My Own Wings’ is a transmedia project that explores the intersex identity. The project is based on different testimonies from intersex people as well as research on different social, medical and legal issues.
Intersex people are born with a variation from the standard of what is normally socially accepted as a male or female body. Historically the term ‘hermaphrodite’ was used in describing the concept, but it is no longer considered appropriate. According to InterAct, experts estimate that as many as 1.7% of the world population is born with intersex traits. The greatest challenge for people born with ambiguous sex variations is social acceptance and stigmatization. The need to be ‘normal’, a concept in this case that is usually created and defined by doctors & medicine, has led many in the intersex community to feel shame. Some intersex infants and babies are surgically or hormonally altered to create more socially acceptable sex characteristics even when there is no risk posed to their health. We hope that our project especially reflects the resiliency that so many of our participants have shown in doing their best to relate to society not as victims but as dignified members of their communities who have worked hard to develop an acceptance of themselves while having to deal with the complex and layered experience of not being born in the public eye as a traditionally accepted male or female.’ #KatiaRepina #CarlaMoral
