Today we introduce Kennedi Carter @internetbby who is one of the artist on display selected by an internationally acclaimed jury ✨Here a sneak peek at Kennedi’s work - ‘Awaken, My Love’ ? ‘In her book ‘In the Wake: On Blackness and Being’, cultural critic Christina Sharpe uses the notion of a ‘wake’ and its many meanings to describe the anti-black aftermath and afterlife of the transatlantic slave trade, that scene of death in which containment and racism are seemingly normative.
Inspired by Sharpe’s work, ‘Awaken, My Love’ is a photographic exploration not so much of ‘the wake’ but of the love, joy, and caress that exists within the wake and marks black life. ‘Awaken’ is wake work. Photographic snatches of the interiority of survival through many sorrows.
With the camera and the eyes as instruments, I create images that depict places inside the ‘wake’ where black people find air pockets of life, zones of privacy, safety, and beauty in the midst of pain and suffering.’ #KennediCarter
