Dr. Leana Wen is ready to protect women’s access to health care on a national scale as she steps in as the new president of @plannedparenthood this November. As the first #physician to lead the organization in nearly 50 years, she hopes to lift the group above the politically divisive fray by reminding people that it offers necessary, and in many places desperately needed, medical services, including breast exams and infertility and incontinence treatments. “We’re not here to make a political statement,” she tells TIME. “We’re here to provide #healthcare to those who need us, and we will have to continue to fight to defend that access to care, because others, not us, have been distorting the work that we do.” Wen is among 50 people changing health care in 2018.
