Looking into my archives for images of food production I have come across pictures of rice production in Cambodia's Angkor Wat region, near the modern city of Seim Reap. The first image is of a farmer covering himself as he waits out late afternoon rain storm so that he can keep working in his fields. The second image is shot from an ultralight plane showing the common practice of plowing the fields with a water buffalo. The pictures where shot while working on a story for @NatGeo. The story was about the management and eventual over management of water that helped to flood the temples and caused the capital of the empire to be move closer to the south China sea. Phnom Penh became the capital city, becoming the successor state of the once powerful Hindu and Buddhist Khmer Empire, which ruled most of the Indochinese Peninsula between the 11th and 14th centuries. I have spent a good amount of time in Cambodia & I'm always drawn to the hard manual labor that needs to produce rice. The population in 2016 was 14.7 million. An estimated 66% of the population is dependent on farming. Rice is the country’s staple food, providing 65–75% of the population’s energy needs. Cambodia has sufficient land and water resources to enhance productivity and increase rice production. Sufficient investment in irrigation infrastructure can further increase cropping intensity and crop productivity. International donors could be tapped for irrigation development, in line with the government’s goal of becoming self-sufficient in rice and a rice exporter. The government recently adopted a new rice policy to promote growth in paddy production and will aim to introduce new technologies, improve agricultural practices. #AnkgorWat #Cambodia #rice #foodproduction
