Dramatically different auroras can appear in the course of a single night. Like snowflakes, no two auroras are quite the same. I have photographed them from Arctic to Antarctic and still become surprised by unusual appearances. On this winter midnight of Swedish Lapland at 68 degrees north a colorless but well defined northern lights appeared across the sky. The seven stars of the Big Dipper are near the top and bright star Vega is on the left.
