This statistic is heartbreaking. We need to find ways to offer more support to parents. I’m slowly learning ASL with Akira thanks to LAUSD, apps & You Tube ! It is such beautiful language. Shout out to @deaf_life_ @castillejoshua & @mrlukechristian for being huge inspirations !!! #deafawareness #asl #whyisign #learnasl #bilateralhearingloss #specialneedsparent #Repost @whyisign with @get_repost ・・・ People, let me tell you. Often it’s not because they DO NOT want to learn, but it is because of the lack of accessible resources that are given to families with deaf and hard of hearing children. It breaks my heart every time a family tells me they want to learn or to have a deaf mentor, but live too far away, or there is no accessible services at all to support families. We wonder why deaf education is struggling? It is due to the fact that not enough deaf and hard of hearing professionals are working in early intervention, or have services, not just only speech is available for families. Often more than not, speech may be the only thing available, why is that? Why aren’t ASL (and other native signed languages) offered? Why aren’t there deaf mentor programs everywhere? We have to continue the fight to demand accessible services, including ASL specialists, teachers of the deaf, deaf and hard of hearing early interventionists, and access to deaf community for families to seek support and understanding so they can raise their deaf and hard of hearing children successfully with everything possible. A family, in fact, today contacted me asking help in finding deaf mentors, & support in their area. It should be a given, and families shouldn’t have to “look” for it, beg, or fight for it. More than ever, we have to continue to demand every family’s right to access sign language & deaf mentors.
