Let’s talk Ciguatera. ? I’m getting quite a bit of questions on it so there it is! Ciguatera is a food poisoning caused by eating a fish that has the Ciguatera toxin. It’s normally found in carnivorous bigger fish, but it can also be found in smaller fish that live in tropical and subtropical waters (Pacific, Indian and Caribbean oceans). The symptoms can be brutal, such as vomiting, abdominal pain but most importantly it has long term effects like it attacks the neurological system and your body mixes hot and cold and you can have a slow or irregular heart beats for months. I had friends who even got symptoms for over a year and some for a couple months. When I’m in the Bahamas by example, I avoid eating grouper bigger than 10 pounds, barracudas and cubera snapper bigger than an arm length. It can be unpredictable and you can contract it by smaller fish (cases have been seen with hogfish, parrotfish, etc). Someone may eat the tail part and not be affected, but the filets closer to the head may be. It’s the most common seafood/fish related illness reported in the world (more than mercury poisoning by example). There are a few rumours on how to figure out if the fish is contaminated such as “the ants and flies won’t eat it”, but of them are unfounded. The only trick that works (and it’s awful) is to feed it to a cat and see if it dies). If you have more question, please DM me. Or google it ? ? @riley.whitelum onboard of LaVagabonde ⛵️ @bubbablade @issademar
