Our new Casa Vogue Issue 🌸 ‘Il Giardino della Scrittrice’ by Maggie Barrett @maggiebarrettsideas - Photos by Joel Meyerowitz @joel_meyerowitz 💐 ‘It would take me three years to make a series of rooms and spaces, each communicating with its neighbour and yet complete unto itself. I chose only Mediterranean plants and hearty climbing roses best suited to stony ground and arid summers. Likewise trees: olives, pomegranate, fig. There is no room for the iconic Tuscan colonnade of cypress trees, so I chose just one to act as an exclamation mark. The second autumn I hired an excavator to dig up the remaining land in front of the house, brought in tops soil and seeded clover. And it was gorgeous. But, as writers and gardeners well know, editing and revision are a vital part of creating a successful work. The clover was too precious and so the following autumn I over-seeded grass here and there making a strong, more natural carpet. The roses I had envisioned climbing up the pergola refused to do as they were told. So I yanked them, transplanting them to the recently built stone and wood fence where they are thriving. In their place wisteria now creeps over the pergola, its late spring perfume mixing with that of broom and jasmine, the latter making its slow crawl over the exterior of the house. Then just as their scents fade, the Madame Alfred Carrière rose tree by the pigs’ stall exudes its sweetness, followed by the Nahema rose over the arch at the gate. And finally comes the relaxing waft of lavender oil from approximately forty plants scattered among borders and beds. The thing with nature is that there is no final act. Gardening is about being in the moment, nurturing a piece of earth of which you are privileged to be the temporary caretaker. It’s about both feeling the connection to the planet and accepting the impermanence of being. An ongoing plot with mysteries yet to be revealed.’ Keep reading the article by #MaggieBarrett in our new Casa Vogue Issue and today on vogue.it 🌿🍃🌾
