SOME Prince fans are weird revisionists. I’ve heard just a lil too convenient crafted story of the prefect discovery. it’s weirdly the same narrative: like they knew genius was hitting planet earth within the first 20 secs of hearing “In Love” from #ForYou. Or there’s always some “I was there in 79!!!!” tale I never believe. half the time I wanna be like “lemme find out your introduction to @Prince was @juliaroberts in the bathtub” like the rest of America. (“how did she not electrocute herself w the walkman headphones touching the water?” Is one of like 200 questions I have about Pretty Woman) I mean yeah, if music is playing when tragedy strikes then the music serves as an audio Polaroid. That said: him debuting within mins of my grandpa dying is a hell of a memorable entry—didn’t impact me tho. I dug the synth bass work on the 2nd half of “I Wanna Be Your Lover”’s jam part (I dug “Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad” slightly better) but at 8 i really wasn’t paying attention. Had I been born in Detroit then this woulda been a whole nother post. Mainly because #ElectrifyingMojo kept Prince’s now 38 year old classic #DirtyMind (10/8/80) in The D’s steady diet of synth & soul. I was a Time fan that reluctantly copped 1999 back in 82. It would be another 2 years before I played catch up with the rest of Post Rain America. I mean don’t get me wrong: Dirty Mind is the blueprint. I’m just saying that I wasn’t paying attention back then. I was 9 & no dj in Philly was keeping this album in heavy rotation. Took a long time for me to get its significance. I now see how this effortlessly displays his pop craftsmanship leaps and bounds past the rest. Gotta respect that. Happy 38th Dirty Mind
