The National Trails System doesn’t just protect amazing scenic views, it also preserves routes that are key to our nation’s history -- whether that’s trails of past exploration, migration or military action. One such trail is Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail (pictured here). This trail commemorates Spanish Commander Anza’s expedition to bring colonists to the San Francisco Bay area in 1775-1776. Today, the 1,200-mile Juan Bautista de Anza trail connects history, culture and outdoor recreation from Nogales, Arizona, to the San Francisco Bay Area. Along the way, hikers, bikers and riders on the trails & rails can experience diverse deserts, mountains, and coastal areas, and learn the historical roles of Native American and Spanish cultures in the settlement of Arizona and California.
