Flashback to a shoot from a few years ago that I did to promote breast cancer awareness. Today, I’m with my mom at MD Anderson for her yearly checkup, a time of year we always hold our breaths and pray that we will be blessed with God’s grace and good news. We’ve spent the past decade here, and I’ve grown to feel very at home at MD Anderson. I have had the opportunity to meet and become friends with some wonderful people, patients, survivors and warriors, family members, caregivers, doctors, nurses, volunteers, and staff, who are all working together as a team to fight and beat cancer. . I was a freshman in college when my mom was battling breast cancer, and I decided to stay home and go to college in Houston instead of accepting an academic scholarship out of state. I wanted to be with my mom every step of the way throughout her battle, and I consider myself blessed to have been able to take her to every single appointment and treatment while she fought for her life. Along our journey, I’ve met so many family members and friends in waiting rooms, and learned that there are so many kids who are away from home at college or working, and they don’t get to physically be there with their parents as they go through this battle. . A goal of mine is to form a group that provides support to the children of moms who are battling breast cancer. Part of this includes building a network that connects us kids to an emotional support group, as well as to doctors and medical professionals who can help us understand what’s medically going on, and finally, if a daughter or son is away from home and can’t be there to go with their mother to appointments and treatments, connect them with a family companion in the group who is at home base and can act as a friend and aid to their mother and bring them to or meet them at these appointments, so that no patient ever has to be alone at a treatment or appointment if they don’t want to be. It’s a big goal but I know that it is possible, and I’m looking for others who would like to join me in making it a reality ❤️ #fbf#crucialcatch#breastcancerawareness
