my dearest soul-sister has new music out today @joy__williams ❤️❤️ ・・・ Canary and The Trouble With Wanting are out now!! Link up top! . Side A Canary I wrote this song with my friends @caitlynsmith and @maestrofuzz_angelo in Nashville one rainy day last Fall. I’d been really feeling heavy about all I’d been reading in the news- division, and the complexity of so many things rising up at the time. Emotions were high everywhere I turned. Politically, socially, personally. There were days I felt helpless to know when and how to speak out and be a part of positive change. A few years back, I remembered reading about workers who would bring canaries in cages down into the darkness of the mines where they worked. If anything wasn’t safe (like if there was a gas leak), canaries would be the first to alert them of the danger, before the workers could even detect it. These tiny birds were the protectors and keepers, the first ones to tell the Truth. I wanted to write a song about that, and play with that idea. I think it’s fair to say that many of us have had seasons in life when someone or something tried to silence us, or make us feel very small, like our voice didn’t matter. This song is the call to sing, and not stay silent any longer. To speak out. To look out for one another, and to speak up for ourselves. I believe it can make all the difference. . Side B The Trouble With Wanting This song was written around a year and half ago, after midnight and red wine with one of my favorite songwriting souls in Nashville, @wruckestrike. Natalie and I have known each other for years, and late one evening after we’d already written one song, we got to talking about Longing. Whether it’s desiring a possession, a place, or a person, the idea of “if only...” is something I think we’ve all wrestled with from time to time. The wine glasses got filled again, and we delved into how desire can truly ache. It can suck you out of seeing the beauty in the Now. It can drive you crazy, and it can teach you, too. We wrote this song in under an hour on my porch. You can hear crickets chirping in the background on the work tape we recorded as we sang it down that night. . Photo @andybarron
