"Quite a few of Herbert List’s images look like they would fit easily into contemporary fashion, lifestyle and beauty magazines … their atmosphere and style could be the results of painstakingly composed professional photoshoots. But his contact sheets show us that all they really took was an afternoon with some friends on the rocky coastline of Liguria. Perhaps Cecil Beaton and George Hoyningen-Huene were right, when they predicted that the young List's style would be a natural fit in the world of fashion photography, even though List hated working on assignments and being trapped with professional models in a studio.
