Just after the gavel came down and the hearing came to a close on Sept. 28, Sen. Jeff Flake is surrounded by fellow Sens. Thom Tillis (R-NC) above left, Mike Crapo (R-ID) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC), lower right. The Senate Judiciary Committee voted to advance Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation to the full Senate, but only after an emotional #Flake, a Republican from Arizona, requested that the Senate delay its full vote for a week to allow for an FBI investigation into the sexual assault allegations against #Kavanaugh. Only five hours earlier, Flake's office had released a statement claiming that he would vote to confirm Kavanaugh. Flake's office sent out his statement announcing support of Kavanaugh just five minutes before the committee was slated to begin its first meeting of the day. On his way there, he was confronted by two women who said they were sexual assault survivors. "Look at me and tell me that it doesn’t matter what happened to me," one of the women, Maria Gallagher, told the Senator. "That you will let people like that go into the highest court of the land and tell everyone what they can do to their bodies." Photograph by @davidbutow@reduxpictures for TIME
