Photograph by @PaulNicklen // Happy Sea Otter Awareness week! These amazing creatures play a vital role in nearshore ecosystems around the world. I found this one on the West Coast of British Columbia, happily doing its thing. Sea otters use rocks to dislodge and open shells, they will even keep their own favourite rock, which they use time and time again for this task. They’ve also got a loose pouch of skin under their forelegs, which they use to store food while they continue to dive and forage. Similar to humpbacks, otters were hunted almost to extinction, but an international ban on hunting and a robust effort at conservation has seen them make a remarkable comeback. It’s just one more reminder that we can correct our human errors if we care enough to make real changes in policy.
