Last week we shared recent acquisitions to the #GuggenheimCollection, made possible through the support of generous patrons. Today’s final highlight is collection artist Paul Chan, we hope you enjoyed viewing a selection of our newly acquired works!

Paul Chan’s influential practice ranges from documentary films and digital animations to charcoal drawings and conceptual typefaces. In “Pentasophia (or Le bonheur de vivre dans la catastrophe du monde occidental)” (Pentasophia [or The happiness of living in the disaster of the western world]), five black fabric figures undulate wildly on a platform raised above a collection of trash and debris. At once abstract and the figurative, and cycling between effects of despair, menace, and ecstasy, these ambiguous forms, which Chan refers to as “Breathers,” are trapped in a perpetual state of motion. This work joins another by Chan in the collection from his series The 7 Lights; both are examples of the artist’s interest in creating animated imagery that transcend the frame or screen.
