The last year has been a wake up call. The #metoo campaign has highlighted the endemic ‘toxic masculinity’ in our society.
Why do we men act this way? I can’t help feel it comes from a place of fear and insecurity. Fear to show love and be loved. Fear to embrace emotion and be vulnerable.
If we want to create a more equal society it starts with us men accepting ourselves and understanding our own inherant gender privilege.
Patriarchal privilege, may seem invisible to us but that’s only because it a system that we’ve benefitted from since birth.
I’m grateful to have been raised by a strong mother who taught me the power of women and encouraged me to embrace my own weaknesses and vulnerability.
Ahead of this years UN General Assembly debate we can all do more to be outspoken allies and remember that ultimately, we were all brought into this world by a woman.
