MEET WIN! “I’m an educator in the sf bay area, I teach eighth grade language arts and social studies. All of my students come from immigrant backgrounds, with some arriving as recent as a few months ago. My students really inspire me. They’re resilient, funny and full of surprises. While many are eager to learn and do well despite the obstacles they have faced and continue to face, these students are highly vulnerable to losing faith in their educational system.
If they don’t see their education as a meaningful avenue for self-actualization, how can they maintain any kind of dedication to it? My goal is to create a fun and engaging classroom environment which combats the potential for my students eventually viewing their education as irrelevant. One way I do this is by providing them with a lot of space for autonomy and decision making. One thing I really need, ironically is books.
