It is the smallest constellation in the sky but to several nations such as Brazil is much more than that. The Southern Cross appears on the country's flag as a symbol of the southern hemisphere. A large dark nebula known as the Coalsack sits right next to it and almost resembles the map of Brazil! Our closest star system, Alpha Centauri, is on the top left, only 4 light years away in the galactic neighborhood.
Standing in the middle of a large sugarcane field near the town of Campos dos Goytacazes in Rio de Janeiro state, I was enjoying this star-filled sky, while fighting with mosquitoes, when my Afro-Brazilian friend reminded me of another story. After Portuguese settlement about 5 million slaves from Africa were brought to Brazil from 1501 to 1866. Many of them worked an entire life in these fields for an economy which was based on exporting sugar.
