On this day in 1967, the Beach Boys released Smiley Smile. Devised as a simplified version of SMiLE, this album features a minimalist approach and lo-fi production. Recording took only six weeks in Brian's makeshift home studio, using predominantly radio broadcasting equipment, a detuned piano, electronic bass and a Baldwin theater organ. While the album featured the hits "Good Vibrations" and "Heroes and Villains," it became their lowest charting album to that point, peaking at #41.
