It’s been a bountiful summer for bunker in the waters off New York — and for local whale spotters. Bunker, a favorite food of many larger predators, including whales, are enjoying another year in a decade-long recovery. But as industrial boats such scoop up the fish — it’s perfectly legal to catch them in federal waters outside the 3-mile state line — fans of New York’s resurgent #whale population are worried that one of the whales’ chief food sources could be threatened. “We have a major issue with a fishing fleet coming in and taking all the food from the whales,” said Tom Paladino, a former charter fishing boat captain who started running whale watches. At the local level, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is not concerned. But some scientists point out that there’s very little local data on menhaden populations, in part because the fish migrate widely; there’s just no way of knowing if industrial fishing in these waters could send the whales further out to sea in search of food. @dave_sanders took this photo of a whale feeding on bunker.
