Photo by @bertiegregory // A brown skua patrols the massive king penguin colony at St Andrews Bay, South Georgia Island. These predatory birds fly up and down penguin colonies looking for eggs and young chicks to snatch. Skuas can also be parasitic as they look for adult penguins returning from fishing trips to feed the chicks. The skuas wait for the moment an adult penguin regurgitates food for the chick. They quickly swoop down and steal the meal. The poor penguins must then return back to the sea in search of another meal for their chicks. It might be harsh on the penguins, but these skuas have figured out a clever way to exploit the nutrient rich ocean without being able to go in it themselves.
