“No matter how immediate photography has become, there is no less pleasure in being surprised by what the camera saw,” writes our staff photographer @heislerphoto. “I have usually found myself covering things such as politics and social issues. I use the same 2 cameras and lenses day in and day out, so as to pay attention to what’s in front of the camera and not the equipment. But knowing a camera so well can also be detrimental; one becomes comfortable, images less surprising.” Recently he tried something different, using a panoramic camera to take pictures for special report about how NYC’s streetscapes have been transformed by vacant storefronts and commercial blight. Once signs of economic decline and high crime, vacancies today are the result of landlords holding out for the highest rents possible. In all, @heislerphoto photographed 10 locations in Manhattan and Brooklyn. The wide angles, he writes, “captured smaller things, like the items that were left behind — empty jewelry display cases on Madison Avenue or restaurant equipment in the West Village.” Visit the link in our profile to see the full project.
