From @tmagazine | In the mid-20th century, when #Detroit was flush with manufacturing money, #Michigan became the epicenter of the Modernist experiment. Here, @andrewlambdinmoore photographed the architect Minoru Yamasaki’s currently unoccupied Reynolds Metals Regional Sales Office in the suburb of Southfield. The building makes use of his signature glass curtain walls and intricate grille work. #MinoruYamasaki, the most prolific and high-profile builder of the period, helped design Detroit and its suburban sprawl, as well as high-profile projects around the U.S. like the World Trade Center. Born in Seattle to #Japanese immigrants, he earned an architecture degree from @uofwa before moving to NYC in 1934. According to a recent biography of the architect, the Yamasaki family’s “Japanese heritage made them unwelcome” in NYC’s wealthiest enclaves. So Minoru eventually bought a piece of farmland outside the village of Troy, New York, where he’d later build his own office.
