The World at Night project
If you replace the rising orange Mars in image with a bright blue dot, it's almost the night view from an arid lifeless desert on the Red Planet. This is how it feels being in the Atacama Desert of Chile at night.
This was in April 2016. I was on Cerro Armazones mountain, on assignment for European Southern Observatory to photograph night environment of the future home for the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) with a 40-meter primary mirror, the largest on Earth. On top of these rocks the telescope is expected to receive its first light in 2024, exploring new boundaries of the universe.
