The future of captive-bred lions was debated after Parliament's Portfolio Committee for Environment hosted a colloquium last week this time.
The event, entitled "Captive Lion Breeding for Hunting in South Africa: Harming or Promoting the Conservation Image of the Country”, was well attended and as expected polar opposite views were once again reiterated/regurgitated by ‘welfare’/‘conservation’ organisations and the ‘hunting’ fraternities. Both days were attended by representatives from the #kevinrichardsonfoundation and although feedback from some other NGOs seems to indicate that government listened favourably to their arguments, the info I received is that this may just be wishful thinking. At best, perhaps we can expect some tighter regulations aimed at placating a few however a total ban on breeding lions?
