Did you know the coloring of some animals serves as a warning to potential predators? This is a phenomenon called aposematism. The psychedelic patterning of this picturesque dragonet works that way-- signaling potential predators to stay away! If that isn’t enough, these fish exude a very thick slime coat that is full of bitter, noxious compounds, making them unpalatable to would-be predators. This species originates from the Philippines, eastern Indonesia, and northwest Australia. In the wild they are found on sandy bottoms hovering over the rubble just below coral heads. These small fish feed throughout the entire day-- a necessity as the bulk of their diet is comprised of small crustaceans. Photographed at @nebraskaaquatic
